On my last blog post I shared about participating in the Progressive Paper Doll group on Facebook. I wanted to share with you today some photos of the paper doll I received in the Enchanted Garden theme paper doll exchange.

The packaging of  Sakura was a gift in and of itself!

Roslind shared with me that Sakura meant beauty and joy.

In addition to the paper doll Sakura, I received a letter telling me a bit about the doll written by Roslind.   I also received a beautiful handmade paper screen also created by Roslind.

I was completely blown away by the intricate layering of papers to create both this beautiful paper doll and background screen.

New Free Watercolor Roses Video Release

Old fashioned roses in my studio, photo by Marla L. Niederer

When we moved to our home many years ago, I was pleasantly surprised to find old fashioned pink roses growing in our yard.  They generally bloom around Mother’s day each year depending on the weather.  They only bloom once a season but their beauty and fragrance is oh so delightful!  Last spring I brought some of the roses in and made a lovely arrangement in a vase to bring to my studio.

I decided to record a watercolor demo painting them to share with you on my OrsinisAngels YouTube channel.  I thought I would release it now while many of us are still looking forward to all the beautiful blossoms springtime brings. To view the free watercolor painting roses video on my OrsinisAngels YouTube channel click on the picture below.

China Patterns in my art journal

I recently had surgery on my wrist so while I have been recuperating I have been taking a lovely online class from Idania Salcido.  For the class, I am working in my journal left handed and using watercolors instead of acrylics because they are easier for me to use now.  I chose to use patterns from my china teacups and saucers.  In the class she also encourages her students to play around with colors.  I must admit I’m having quite a bit of fun with this.

I also wanted to thank all of you for following my progress all of these years by sharing with you a free video tutorial on how I needle sculpt a cloth doll nose.  You can view it on YouTube by clicking on the link to my OrsinisAngels YouTube channel.  I hope you enjoy the video.

Flaming June and Left handed painting

One of my favorite paintings, Flaming June, was painted by Sir Frederic Leighton in 1895.  The painting currently resides in Museo de Arte de Ponce in Puerto Rico.  I hope to be able to travel there to see it sometime.

The model for the paintings body is unknown but it is believed that the model for the face was either Dorothy Dene or Mary Lloyd, two of Frederic Leighton’s favorite models during this time period.   I found a photograph of Dorothy Dene on Wikipedia.  It is no wonder she was one of his favorite models.

Since I will need to continue to embrace left handed painting for quite some time (as a result of my right arm injury), I decided to take some artistic liberty and use Dorothy Dene’s  photo as the basis for this weeks left handed painting.

I used Stabilo All pencils, water-soluble graphite pencils, watercolors, gouache, and a touch of Stabilo pastel pencils.

More Painted Teabags and what I’m reading today

I thought it was an appropriate time to read  Alice in Wonderland again.  I don’t believe I have read it since I was a child and that was more than a few weeks ago!

I have also been painting more little teabags.  I am having such fun doing this.  Not sure when I will stop.

I also thought I would share a picture of one of my teacup and saucers.  I’m going to use it in a project but am keeping that a secret for now.

I hope in the midst of all that is going on you are able to maintain some peace and calm.

For me, creating art works well for this.  I hope you are able to find something creative that works for you as well.

Day 1 of 51 Days of ART or the Shell of a Nut left Upon my Doorstep

A few weeks ago I found this open walnut shell on the back steps of our screened in porch just sitting there waiting to be picked up.  As you can see it has the shape of a heart inside of it.  I brought it inside and after showing it to my husband; placed it on a shelf for the day that I would have time to use it as a subject for a watercolor painting. Today I took the walnut shell off of its shelf, poured myself a cup of tea, and started a watercolor journal page using the shell as the subject.  Today is the first of 51 days that I have chosen to take off from my day job and follow my heart and dreams of creating art every day. I thought it befitting to start this journey of the heart making a watercolor sketch of the heart within the shell that nature left for me to find.   I invite you to join me on this quest, follow your heart, follow your dreams, and share with me the tales you have to tell of your travels as I will share with you mine.

“ Sometimes you gotta let your heart lead you, even if you know its someplace you know you’re not supposed to be”         -Van Wilder

“Let yourself be silently drawn by the strange pull of what you really love.  It will not lead you astray.”       - Rumi, Essential Rumi
