The Back Story of Bear and Raccoon Magic

Quite some years ago when the doll club All Dolled Up was active in Ottawa, I attended several of the conferences they were involved in putting together.  At one of the conferences I met a doll maker that made the loveliest dolls and horses for her dolls to ride.  She told me that her doll making gave her something lovely to think about and look forward to everyday.

I always have created art from the time of my first memories as a child.  Creating art has always been a gift that helps me focus on the beauty in this world, a gift that helps keep me calm even in the most difficult of times.

During the time when NYS (where I live) was the epicenter of the pandemic in the US and everything was shut down, I decided it was time to throw myself into a new art doll project to keep something beautiful and fun to focus on day to day.

I chose to start working on Bear and Raccoon Magic at that time and, despite the events unfolding in the world, I was able to keep joy in my heart and relatively calm.

The hats that the Bear and Raccoon Magic wear were inspired by the many adorable hats my granddaughter wears and also what bear and raccoon symbolize in various cultures.

Bear, to me, symbolizes a strong and healing force.  Bears are fierce protectors.   Bears are also often associated with the healing energies of the earth.  Bear is often associated with hibernation, taking the time to go quietly within and letting new ideas grow before putting them forward into the world.  Bear medicine can help one achieve balance within as the trees that they are associated with symbolize balance between earth and sky.

Raccoon, to me, symbolizes creativity and curiosity. They are very protective of their families.  They are very adaptable to their environment and are good problem solvers. They wear masks at all times.  Raccoon medicine can help one to adapt in times of transitions, in times of change.

So not only did I have fun creating Bear and Raccoon Magic, I felt that they were fitting symbols for the times.
