Creating Art with other Artists

It is so nice to be able to attend my art group again.  I used to paint watercolors with a group of artists at TAUNY in Canton NY.  TAUNY recently opened up for the group again and I attended for the first time in a long time last week.  I brought along my watercolors and a painting I had started while on a walk by the river with a very dear friend who is also an artist.  I feel so fortunate to be able to spend time with such kind and talented individuals that are also good friends.  It makes creating art so much more enjoyable and leads to so much more growth as an artist.

I also have been playing with my Silhouette cutting machine this week.  I’m still learning how to use the software and enjoying the process.  These pop up teapot cards that I made were designed by Lori Whitlock.  I bought the SVG file to make them on her website.

I’ve been enjoying the nice weather here lately.  We jumped from winter weather to summer, not that I am complaining!

 

Along with enjoying the beautiful apple blossoms on our trees, I’ve also been enjoying nice walks by the river.

 

After my wrist surgery, I’m finding clay easier to work with than needle sculpting and stuffing cloth dolls.  So I have been doing a bit of experimenting with PaperClay for doll making.  This is a picture of the first doll I have been working on since my surgery.

The Back Story of the Goddess

The Goddess by Marla L. Niederer

I am teaching the Goddess online starting next week and thought I would share a little about her back story with you.

I created the Goddess during a time when I felt the world needed more compassion and healing.

The Goddess by Marla L. Niederer

The Goddess represents Kuan Yin.  For those unfamiliar with Kuan Yin, she is known by many as the Goddess of Compassion, the one who hears the cries of all beings.

She is also known in Buddhism as a Bodhisattva, one who puts off Nirvana in order to liberate all sentient beings. It is a complete act of selflessness and compassion.

Many representations of Kuan Yin depict her as a beautiful Asian woman in flowing gowns carrying a vessel filled with the waters of compassion. She is often depicted standing or seated upon a lotus blossom.

In this interpretation of Kuan Yin, I chose to place a hand crafted and hand painted lotus blossom upon her head as a headdress.  She wears a skirt and shawl of hand painted cheesecloth which represent the waters of compassion.  Her costume is hand beaded with silver lined glass beads.

Getting Ready to Teach the Goddess Online!

I’m real excited to be teaching the Goddess online starting May 11^th on AforArtistic!  The Goddess is a 19” tall needle sculpted, hand painted art doll with ball joints and a facial cloth overlay.

Still working in my Journal

I’ve been working in my art journal as I have been going through the lessons of a class I am taking with Idania Salcido.  Since I need to give my right arm a rest, I've been doing all of my art left handed.  I’ve been working on exploring color in the class.

China Patterns in my art journal

I recently had surgery on my wrist so while I have been recuperating I have been taking a lovely online class from Idania Salcido.  For the class, I am working in my journal left handed and using watercolors instead of acrylics because they are easier for me to use now.  I chose to use patterns from my china teacups and saucers.  In the class she also encourages her students to play around with colors.  I must admit I’m having quite a bit of fun with this.
